Have you been given “a little Jesus?” Or, has anyone shared “a little Jesus” with you? I’m talking about the mini figurines of Jesus that are all being spread around. It’s been a popular trend to pass them out for encouragement.

When I first heard of this trend, I thought it was just silly and perhaps a well meaning, cute idea but a bit sacrilegious. After more thought, I am greatly saddened by the idea that anyone would want “a little Jesus” or a little of Jesus.

Jesus Christ is nowhere near little! He is the biggest hugest person in existence! He is life itself: “I am the way, the truth, and the life,” John 14:6a. (ESV)

The idea that He is little in any way, is not only sacrilegious, it’s heretical. Something that is sacrilegious is: “having or showing a lack of proper respect for a sacred person, place, or object.” (Merriam-Webster)

Heretical is: “of or relating to adherence to a religious opinion contrary to church dogma: characterized by heresy.” (Merriam-Webster)

The idea that Jesus is little is disrespectful to God and His Word, the Bible. In light of this, it is a very serious matter. Not only is Jesus the son of God, He is also God! Most of us are familiar with the Ten Commandments. They are found in Exodus chapter 20. The third commandment is not to take the name of the Lord in vain. Calling Jesus “little” certainly qualifies. Breaking God’s commandments, any of them, isn’t cute. (It could certainly be argued that these figurines break several of the Ten Commandments, but that’s a huge topic!)

The other point to consider is that no one can have just a little bit of Jesus. John 10:27 says, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” The rest of John 14:6, that I mentioned above, says, “No one comes to the Father except through me.” Another important verse that comes to mind is Matthew 6:24: “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other.” This means Jesus will either have all of your person or none of your person. It’s an all or nothing deal. Which means we can have all of Him or none of him -no one can have “a little Jesus.”

Praying that my readers don’t want a little Jesus but want a huge one: The Jesus of the Bible. That Jesus is enormous! He is immense and cannot be measured!

I want that Jesus, do you?
